James entered the world of photography after serving in the Australian Defence Force as an Ammunition Supplies Operator in East Timor, working as an army photographer in conflict zones such as Bougainville and the Solomon Islands, as well as the devastated province of Banda Aceh after the Boxing Day tsunami. On leaving the army he established a commercial photography business in Canberra before moving to Melbourne and founding Jungle Jim Documentary Pictures, along with its sister company The Free Photography Project.
I love being a photographer, I don’t think I have a choice! I am an intensely visual thinker.
